What is Instant Flip?
Instant Flip is a powerful feature that allows traders to quickly close their current position and open a new one in the opposite direction with a single tap. This feature ensures that users can efficiently react to changing market conditions without the need for multiple manual trades.
When using Instant Flip, the initial invested funds for the new position will be based on the invested funds and the realized profit or loss from the original position.
How Instant Flip Works
When a trader initiates an Instant Flip, the system automatically:
- Closes the current open position at the market price.
- Opens a new position in the opposite direction.
Example:
- A trader has a LONG position of 1 BTCUSDT.
- They decide to flip their position to SHORT.
- Using Instant Flip, the system closes the 1 BTCUSDT LONG position and opens a SHORT position under BTCUSDT instantly.
Scenarios Where Instant Flip May Be Unsuccessful
While Instant Flip is designed for seamless transitions, certain conditions may cause it to be unsuccessful:
-
Notional Minimum Order Requirement Not Met
- If the new flipped position does not meet the minimum order amount required to open a trade, the system will close the original position without opening a new one.
- Example: A trader has a LONG position of 10 USDT, and the minimum order amount to open a new trade is 1 USDT. They use Instant Flip to switch to a SHORT position, expecting the system to:
- Close the LONG position
- Instantly open a SHORT position with the same size (10 USDT)
However, here’s what actually happens:
- The system first closes the LONG position.
- Due to market conditions or slippage, the user incurs a realised loss of 9.20 USDT, 0.80 USDT returned instead of 10 USDT.
- The system then attempts to open a new SHORT position with the remaining amount of 0.80 USDT, but…
- If the amount falls below the minimum notional requirement (usually 1 USDT), the new SHORT position fails to open.
-
Exceeding Notional Max Position Size
- If the flipped position exceeds the Notional Max Order Amount for the contract, the system will close the original position but will not open the new one.
- Example: A trader has a LONG position of 34,000 USDT in the PIUSDT pair, where the maximum order amount is 35,000 USDT. If they attempt to Instant Flip, the system tries to open a SHORT position of 34,000 USDT, but if they already have an existing SHORT position or if the flip causes the total exposure, considering the profit of the position being flipped to exceed the 35,000 USDT cap, the system will reject the new position.
Note: The same rule applies to Notional Maximum Position Size and Open Interest.
-
Market Conditions and Slippage
- If the market price moves significantly between the closing of the old position and the opening of the new one, the system may cancel the new order due to unfavorable pricing or liquidity issues.
- Example: A trader attempts to flip a 200,000 USDT position in BTCUSDT, where the max slippage is 0.25%. Suppose the BTC price is 80,000 USDT, the max allowed slippage would be 200 USDT (0.25% of 80,000). If the price moves beyond 80,200 USDT or below 79,800 USDT during the flip process, the system will reject the new order. The original position closes, but the system fails to open the new one due to slippage beyond the allowed threshold.
Note: Users may check the Contract Specifications for each symbol under the Contracts page.
